Said to have been developed more recently by kimono fabric dealer Yoshida Yaichiro at the beginning of the Showa period (around 1930), this neighborhood became famous as an upscale residential area where many government officials and legislators, among other people, chose to live. While the district is located near Meguro Station on the Yamanote and Meguro lines, the residential zones are quite isolated from the din and bustle of the city, such that a distinctive ambience for dwellings that are popular among business leaders and cultural icons has been cultivated. Numerous cultural facilities, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum - located inside a pedestrian zone immersed in lush greenery, are unique to this profoundly historical local community.
