Ikedayama(池田山) means Mt. Ikeda. This high ground, which is said to have appeared as a small hill when seen from the Meguro River, has been affectionately known as Mount Ikeda ever since the Ikeda family, to which the feudal lord of Okayama belonged, built a villa here during the Edo period. Persons linked to the Ikeda family continued to live at this location until the beginning of the Showa era, after which the land was sold as a housing subdivision that became one of the foremost upscale neighborhoods in Tokyo. Even after undergoing renovations, the stately gates of such buildings as the official residences of key government officials and foreign embassies remain standing to this day. Calm and isolated from the din and bustle of the city, the vicinity is selected among the top one hundred scenic sights of Shinagawa. The former residence of the Shoda family is now a park that provides spiritual comfort for visitors.
